Earlier this month, we successfully showcased #Cell with partners at @imperial to audiences of KS2 & KS3 pupils, scientists & colleagues. Next steps: taking it on the road to schools, science festivals and arts spaces. Get in touch for more info. #cellbiology #immunology #dance

Cell

‘Cell’ is a touring dance production based around key elements of cellular biology in Key stage 2 science.

The set for Cell aims to transport the audience into the world of cellular biology. Starting with the white space of the laboratory through the realm of cells themselves into the nucleus and the building blocks of DNA itself.

The set stands as an immersive environment with over-sized cell forms dwarfing the audience and creating a space where the performance happens. The audience will sit amongst the giant cells and the performance will happen around them throughout the space.

The colours are drawn from a sample page of images in a generic Google search for images of cells. The principle colours being blues and purples with greens and pinks. Reds, yellow and orange are absent from the palette.

Five large inflatable structures make up the basic environment. Two of the cells - the white ‘white blood cell’ and the blue T-cell contain the stereo sound system and sit at opposite corners. The largest purple form (the nucleus) sits towards the back corner (furthest from point of entry into the venue) and acts as a shield for the only offstage area. The small white cells are portable and can be placed anywhere within the set at any given time.
