The programme of walks, talks and discussion events is designed to help you get out there and understand more about our amazing landscape and how art works in it. Most of the events are free - just turn up on the day and enjoy. Sign up for the sms alerts for adittional events and last minute programme changes.

ThickSpace_FRED walk led by the artists

Join the artists from China and Latvia on a memorable walk offering you an in-depth insight into the minds of the artists who have created this installation, one in a series of THICKspace(s) created in a number of locations across the Globe.

Torch-lit Walk to ThickSpace_FRED

Join the artists who created THICKspace for a torch-lit walk to experience this special installation at dusk and to gain a greater understanding of the thoughts of the artists. Bring wellies and a torch.

Art and Hill-farming

Ettie Spencer introduces and discusses her family’s wrapped farm as a symbol of the plight of hill-farming and the role of art in its landscape, followed by a special screening of ‘Running Fence’ - a documentary by the Maysles brothers of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1976 installation across hill-farms in the US.

Portable Radio

A round-table discussion with artists, curators and local residents looking at the bigger artworld picture in Cumbria and the value of art in the landscape with Sarah Thelwall and Russell Martin . A downloadable podcast will be available from www.portableradio.org.uk

Curators walk around Goldsworthy’s Sheepfolds

A guided walk around two of Andy Goldsworthy’s Sheepfold sculptures with one of the project’s curators Dick Capel. Discover part of Cumbria’s largest sculpture trail and the connection between this corner of Cumbria and the UK’s best known land-artist.
Meet: Brough Village Hall (off A66 east of Appleby)
Length: 2 1/2 hours - moderate walking

Join curators and artists on a guided mystery tour of FRED

Art Roots Grizedale

Walk and talk by Hayley Skipper, Arts Development Officer for the Forestry Commission at Grizedale, home of the UK's first art in the environment programme - take in some of the artworks sited in the east side of the forest dating from 1977 to today, as well as some of the best views in Grizedale
Meet: Visitors Centre, Grizedale Forest Park, near Hawkshead
Length: 3 hours. Moderate difficulty - waterproof footwear is advised

Ripple and Blencathra

Join artist Steve Messam on a guided tour of FRED’s highest artwork, followed by an ascent to the top of Blencathra (weather permitting).
Meet: Car park on the Scales - Mungrisedale road
Length: 3 hours (moderate to Scales Tarn - hard to mountain summit)
Free. Bring all weather clothing and packed lunch.

Form / Reform and the River Eden
A walk along the River Eden with Christine Hurford, including a talk about her installation ‘Form / Reform’

A fitting farewell party for FRED. Artists collective CNN bring a woodland experience like no other to a secret location for one night only. Beatrix Potter meets Saturday Night Fever and carbon-neutral too.
