  Ceramic.

Using plaster casts to capture the patterns of Morecambe bay I have made 23 ceramic” stepping stones”: ones for each person lost in the 2004 cockling tradgedy. On the side of each piece I have screen printed the name in English of one of the lost cocklers plus a quotation or image from the press reports of the time.Chun-Chao Chui, a Taiwanese calligrapher and artist, is to add the names in mandarin.

The pieces stretch out in a line to create  a pathway that links the viewer to the families, friends and environment of the lost cocklers. The piece  is about the universal need to be adventurous, to strive for improvement and to provide for a family that leads men and woman into a modern form of slavery. It is about those who misled them and imperilled their lives and it is about the forces of nature that still rule our lives despite the sophistication of modern society.
