Willow

(Spray paint)

OS grid ref: NY 114 380
On the side of a house in Gilcrux. Short drive from Cockermouth: A595 for Carlisle, take the road signposted for Tallentire and keep going. Go through Tallentire and follow signs for Gilcrux. Opposite the converted chapel is the house on which the tree will be. On street parking.

Graffiti Willow trees on gable ends.

Paul takes established vocabularies from ceramic printed ‘blue and white’ motif and pattern. Extracting and deconstructing, to provide the raw material he uses to create new forms and images. Paul’s plates, ceramic vignettes of contemporary landscape and large scale installations in the actual landscape are made in ‘traditional’ blue and white, which gives his work a particular resonance and familiarity that leans on a common recognition of its roots. In Willow Paul takes a domestic genre into a different media, on a new scale and in new locations, outside homes instead of inside leaving us to ponder will we still recognize its source? what will be our reactions to its relocation and re-sizing to real life tree scale?
