Wild Boar

(Local Fleeces)

OS grid ref: NY764015
Little Fell, Nr. Kirkby Stephen

A wild boar made of felt will be placed on Wild Boar Fell. It will commemorate the local legend that the last wild boar in England was killed on the fell in the sixteenth century by Lord Musgrave. The transient nature of the installation is also a comment on the changing nature of the fells, and a reflection of the uncertain nature of local hill farming.

Jan is interested in the environment, particularly the landscape all around, and how this is constantly changing. Working in textiles, Jan likes to draw on local sources and materials, and felt made from local wool is an ideal medium. Jan is also strongly affected by the historical context of places she visits, and in allowing her to explore the nature, history and folklore of a fell that she has walked many times, this project is changing Jans view of the area.
